Shanetta Martin

Ms. Martin joined the board of Tango Mercurio in January of 2025. She explores her passions and creativity through dance, music, writing, collage art, and spirituality. She began her tango journey in Washington, DC two decades ago. She has a strong affinity and respect for the quintessence of Argentine tango as discovered through the traditions (including the “codigos”) within tango culture and the dance itself. During her tenure as a tango dancer she has played the roles of organizer, tango DJ, and milonga hostess which she developed as part of a defining eight year experience as a member of the tango community in Sante Fe, NM. After returning to the east coast, she has dedicated herself to her home tango community where she can share the tango odyssey with friends new and old. Ms. Martin is a community builder, researcher, and strategist helping individuals and organizations to bring their ideas to life.

“Argentine tango is at the center of my creative life, which I find to be one of the most fulfilling and multi-faceted endeavors I have ever taken on that has loved me back by challenging me to push beyond the familiar and discover my authentic self through the art of human connection.”

She has a PhD in neuroscience (with a focus in psychoneuroimmunology) from Emory University in Atlanta, GA and moved to Maryland in 2006 to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). During the day, Natalie works as the Chief of Evaluation at the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), where she directs a team of specialists (read: data nerds) to monitor and evaluate ECA’s educational and exchange programming. At night, Natalie loves to go down to the basement to her tango studio to blast Pugliese and dance (by herself, naturally; like the true introvert that she is). Natalie joined the Tango Mercurio Board in May 2024 to both give back to the community she loves and to meet more DC tangueros.

Some fun facts about Nat: In addition to dancing tango, she loves to travel. Natalie has visited nearly 60 countries and adds to that list on a yearly basis. She is a proud Columbus Ohio native and bleeds scarlet and gray (Go Bucks!). Pugliese is her favorite orchestra (she particularly loves when Jorge Maciel is on the mic). She loves animals and currently has a cat named Athena and a rabbit named Moo (you can follow him on Instagram: @moodonahue).. though she's a sucker for a stray so there may be more pets in the house by the time you read this.
